Bionik Labs is a new team at the Digital Media Zone and has already made quite the mark. Global National recently featured Thiago Caires and Michal Prywata with their innovative prosthetic arm prototype that can be operated by the brain.

Just by thinking about it, the arm lifts, the wrist moves and the fingers wiggle. The robotic arm is powered by a small air compressor. It’s less invasive and less expensive than most prosthetic arms currently on the market.

Here is a little background information on Bionik Labs:

Bionik Laboratories Inc. was officially founded in 2010 and is based in Toronto, Canada. The company seeks out problems or flaws in medical technologies, or a lack of medical technology, to do their best to either improve an existing technology or create a new one altogether. In terms of devices, their current focus is on prosthetics and rehabilitation devices. Bionik Labs has invented a pneumatic full arm prosthetic that is controlled by an external EEG system. Based on their similar pneumatic technology, Thiago and Michal have been working on a pneumatic system for walking rehabilitation. They are also working on developing a permanent solution for total lung replacement which can potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives each year globally. Aside from the devices for amputees, devices for rehabilitation, and artificial lungs, Bionik Labs has a huge focus on improving the quality of life for paraplegics and quadriplegics.
